It's understood the man was a worker who was part of a team called out after a tree fell onto the road. He remains in hospital this morning (Friday), where his condition has been described as critical but stable.
Police and paramedics attended the scene, between Norley Road and Whitegate Lane, on Thursday morning. The road remains closed eastbound this morning.
Enquiries are ongoing. The Health and Safety Executive is understood to be investigating the incident. A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "The A556 Chester Road remains closed eastbound this morning (Friday, January 31) following the industrial incident in Sandiway.
"The closure, between Norley Road (The Round Tower) and Whitegate Lane is expected to remain in place until at least midday today. The eastbound carriageway is closed to both motorists and pedestrians."
Cheshire West and Chester Council urged road users to avoid the area. It shared photos of the tree leaning over the A556 earlier this week. Diversions are in place.
