Drunk Passenger Killed in Car Crash After She Grabbed Steering Wheel from Driver

Murders, robberies, burglaries and other major crimes are happening much less often this year in Columbus compared to last year, according to Columbus Police Department data.

A year-to-date comparison between 2023 and 2024 from Jan. 1 to Oct. 24 each year shows a 29.7% decrease in murders, 27.2% decrease in robberies, 22.7% decrease in burglaries and 16.5% decrease in car thefts, according to a news release.

CPD said 26 murders have been reported this year. There were 37 in the same time frame last year. There have been 139 robberies, compared to 191 in the same time frame last year. The number of reported robberies is 139 this year, down from the 191 reported through Oct. 24 last year. Vehicle thefts have dropped to 455 this year after 545 were reported in that time last year.

“These numbers reflect not only a drop in crime but our relentless commitment to solving cases,” Columbus Police Chief Stoney Mathis said in a statement.

CPD also touted a high clearance rate in investigating these crimes in 2024, meaning the department is making more arrests to clear investigations.

The department said its clearance rate for murder is 92%, robbery is 34.4%, burglary is 30.7% and vehicle theft is 66.7%.

“Our clearance rates show the hard work of our detectives, especially in cases like murder, where we’re far exceeding the national average. We’re not letting up and will continue working diligently to make Columbus even safer,” Mathis said.

The national averages for clearance rate of these crimes is 55.5% for murder, 29.9% for robbery, 13.2% for burglary and 10.8% for vehicle theft, according to CPD.
