Why It Matters

The aviation industry has faced several significant incidents and crashes so far in 2025.

On January 29, a catastrophic midair collision occurred in Washington, D.C. involving American Airlines Flight 5342 and a U.S. Army Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter.
All 67 individuals onboard both aircraft perished, making it the deadliest U.S. air disaster in nearly 24 years.

According to a new AP-NORC poll, trust in air safety has fallen since last year, going from 71 percent of Americans considering air travel to be "very safe" or "somewhat safe," to 64 percent as of February 19.

Meanwhile, 12 percent of Americans previously said that air travel was "very" or "somewhat" unsafe, but the figure has now risen to 20 percent.

What To Know

Monday's helicopter crash occurred near Sidbury Road and Island Creek Drive close to the Pender-New Hanover county line in North Carolina, according to the news station WWAY.

The crash occurred in a wooded area, and images from the scene showed many emergency vehicles in attendance.

The aircraft was a Novant Health AirLink helicopter, the station said. Details of the make and model of the helicopter are not yet available.

The crash comes just weeks after a medical plane crashed in Philadelphia shortly after take-off on January 31.

All six people onboard the medical flight were killed, as well as one person on the ground, who was in their car at the time of the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the jet was en route to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri. It was then bound for Mexico.

One of the victims was an 11-year-old who was returning to Mexico after receiving months of treatment at a children's hospital.

What People Are Saying

Novant Health spokesman Julian March said, according to WWAY: "We are focused on the well-being of the flight crew, their families and our team members.

"We are still in the initial response and information gathering phase at this time and have limited information to share. We appreciate the prompt assistance from all area first responders who are assisting us tonight."

What Happens Next

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board may launch an investigation into the incident in the coming days.
