Popular singer best known as ‘70s one-hit wonder dead at 79

Robert John, who scored a number one hit with 1979’s “Sad Eyes,” died on Monday. He was 79.

John’s son Michael Pedrick confirmed the news to Rolling Stone. There was no immediate cause of death noted, but it was said the musician was recovering from a stroke he experienced a few years ago.

John was born in Brooklyn, New York, on Jan. 3, 1946. At 12 years old, he released his first record, “White Bucks and Saddle Shoes,” which reached No. 74 on the pop chart. The singer also led a doo-wop group called Bobby & the Consoles in New York in the 1960s. John’s cover of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” rose to No. 3 on the Hot 100 in 1972.

His career paused difficulties with record labels. John then worked construction in Long Branch, New Jersey, during the early 70s.

Producer and songwriter George Tobin mentioned at this time that he wanted to work with the singer. From those sessions, “Sad Eyes” was born. In 1980, the song was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male.
