ON THURSDAY FEBRUARY 20th, 2025, THERE WAS A FATAL AVALANCHE ACCIDENT IN THE AREA LOCALLY KNOWN AS THE NOSE NEAR OPHIR PASS JUST NORTH OF SILVERTON, COLORADO
Silverton, CO: On Thursday February 20th, 2025, around 1:09 pm, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office and the Silverton Medical Rescue team received a satellite emergency communications alert from a reporting party of the avalanche accident in an area locally known as the Nose in the Ophir Pass area. A 41-year-old female from Crested Butte, Colorado, who was skiing with a male partner was caught, carried and critically buried resulting in her fatality. Her ski partner, a male from Crested Butte, was also caught, carried and skied out of moving snow. Others in the area responded to the avalanche accident and assisted in digging out the female buried skier, who was deceased when located.
Silverton Medical Rescue dispatched their Avalanche Response team to the avalanche accident area at about 1:57pm and the deceased skier was extracted from the Middle Fork of Mineral Creek area locally known as the Nose. Twenty-seven team members responded to the incident from Silverton Medial Rescue, La Plata County Search & Rescue, and the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office along with team members from Silverton Avalanche School, CAIC and Silverton Mountain. The Silverton Medical Rescue Team would like to thank Silverton Mountain for providing their helicopter and crew to aid the search and rescue mission on Ophir today.
